The Routine Creative
Alex Cottles: Brand Designer - The Routine Creative
Alex Cottles is the man behind The Routine Creative, a brand identity design business that helps entrepreneurs take their branding from boring to worthwhile. Alex is the kind of person you hope to be in business with one day. Not only does he offer his unique expertise in graphic design to help your business-level up, but he does it in a way that's fun and engaging. Alex tends to work with clients that already have a good foundation for their businesses. They've seen growth and know their market audience well, but they require a new angle or a push to create that success they've been after from the start. Once you get the pleasure of starting a project with Alex, he'll be your friendly guide through logo design, color palettes, font design, establishing brand guidelines, creating business cards and packages, and other brand support. Cottles is incredibly passionate about his work and finds that his chameleon personality tends to get along with everyone he meets and meshes really well with his creativity and with the business aspect of what he does.

As far as his modern and minimalistic style goes, he credits many designers and artists who inspired his journey, like Breanna Rose, Emma Rose Agency, and a few of his friends at Station 7. Something he's developed as he's grown as an artist is the idea that less is more. Visit his website or social media. You'll understand his simple yet gorgeous aesthetic that catches the eye immediately and tells the story without stating the exact message. Even his trademarked slogan "minimal marks that represent big ideas" centers around the idea that you can get a message across with less. For designers just starting out, Alex suggests being forward with their work. It might not be perfect, and that's really ok. He encourages other artists to be comfortable marketing themselves and speaking about their business whenever they get a chance. He also suggests learning as much about the business of your business as possible. Get to know the admin work that's required, as well as information on taxes, bookkeeping, etc. If you can outsource that work to someone else who can help you with that side of the business, that way, you can focus on what you love to do, design, and create. As long as you're not taking yourself too seriously and enjoying the journey just as much as the destination, he believes you are successful.
"Don't feel imposter syndrome if you didn't go to college or didn't study design. We are blessed to be in a time where there is so much education at our fingertips."
SOME QUESTIONS I ASK:

- What's your design process?
- Why do you do what you do? (WIDWID)
